North African Migration Projects

As a part of the work with internationals we have the opportunity to partner with groups around the world.  In North Africa we work with the French Protestant church in responding to the spiritual and physical needs of refugees.  This work entails personally meeting with, listening to, praying with, and responding to their most urgent needs.

Migration is a human right.  Unfortunately in the world of today it is a right that is not universally recognized.  As long as that is the case we must bridge the gap – reaching out to our brothers and sisters of Africa who are migrating north – escaping civil war, political persecution, famine, drought, disease, and economic ruin.  We must reach out to them with the love of Christ – helping them to know that they are not forgotten and that Jesus loves them as do we.

MEDICINES FOR REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS
Account ID: 81412

Medicines for Migrants is an effort to reach out with the love of Christ to people who are abandoned, abused and neglected.  They are unwanted in their countries of origin and unwanted in North Africa.  They live in extremely desperate conditions (10 to 20 per room, without access to basic human and medical needs).  Sickness and disease are rampant.  This project will respond to this great need by providing the most necessary medicines – helping children and adults to live another day, see a glimmer of hope and experience the love of Christ.   Here some examples of what can be done to help and at what cost:

  • 1 round of anti-biotics – $15
  • anti fever and pain medicine – $3
  • x-ray – $15
  • dental care – $25
  • blood test – $30
  • basic consultation -  $8
  • sonogram - $45

EMERGENCY HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE FOR REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS
Account ID: 81413

The "Assistance Center for Migrants" will respond to an overwhelming need in the population centers of Northern Africa. There has been a huge influx of African refugees into this area.  This effort will assist local congregations in trying to meet the most immediate spiritual and physical needs of these precious people - offering hope to a hopeless people.  Areas of ministry include spiritual guidance and prayer, listening and encouragement, meeting basic needs (food, shelter, medicine), emergency lodging for those in medical crisis, counseling on where to go and what to do next and looking together for solutions for the future.  A significant number of the migrants are not christian.  This project will allow us to share Christ with them. Here are some examples of possible helps and the approximate costs of each:

  • blanket - $4
  • food pack (enough for 2 people to eat for 2 weeks) - $15
  • emergency shelter (one month) - $50
  • call to family back home - $3
  • new born baby pack - $20

EDUCATIONAL AID AND ASSISTANCE FOR AFRICAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS - AEA
Account ID: 81414

The Educational Aid and Assistance project for African university students relates to the continuing migrant tragedy taking place in North Africa.  A significant number of the Africans that find themselves here without official papers are university students who came to study and get their diplomas.  Because of political and social instability and/or economic disaster in their countries of origin they have lost the educational aid they once had.  Many of them are supported by their families and when crisis strikes the family the required assistance is no longer possible.  If a student is not officially registered and attending a university they cannot continue living in country with a student visa - thus they become "illegal."  This project reflects a long term solution to the migration problem - the development of the countries of origin.  We must do all that we can to ensure that the future leaders and even presidents of Africa have the opportunity to grow and learn and lead their own countries to a better future of faith, freedom, peace, and economic possibility.  The future of the African church is to be found in these young men and women.  The fundamental criteria is need (other criteria include proven success in studies and vision for the future).  After completing a comprehensive selection process (that includes written application, interviews, and referral) the students are chosen.  This assistance will take several forms:  long term aid (the scholarship is $80 a month) (evaluated at the end of each semester), short term aid, final payments to receive diplomas, and return travel.

MICRO ENTERPRISE PROJECT FOR REFUGEES/MIGRANTS
Original Account ID: 81415

This project will help refugees/migrants in North Africa take a degree of control of their lives and provide for themselves basic human needs.  They have left their countries of origin to escape civil war, political and ethnic persecution, famine, drought, and disease.  Desiring freedom and a normal life they arrive in countries that do not want them, treat them inhumanely, and will not allow them to work.  These micro enterprise projects will help the refugees/migrants to use their talents and abilities to provide for themselves.  Within the African community they are able to realize their projects.  To this date over 350 micro projects have been started and they are generating revenue.  Another wonderful result is the hope that these enterprises provide.  To some degree the refugee/migrant is able to take control of his/her life and put to use his/her abilities and talents. The micro enterprise efforts are some of the most hopeful and positive things that we do.  This work is a light in the midst of darkness.  For as little as $50 a micro project can be started.
